Celestial University

Cami in Mesa, AZ

Celestial University

We had decided to launch the Celestial University program, so we prepared a folder for each sister with all the different majors and the goals required for each major.  We advertised with simple posters "Celestial University -- enroll now!" etc., with clip-art pictures of graduation hats and scrolls.  We tried to get everyone interested, and excited about the program.

We decorated with lots of banners with cute saying about the different colleges (like "Home Ec./Cooking -- Tastes Great!"), and letterman jackets, pom-poms, etc.  We set up four round tables, and put items that represented the colleges on them (like scriptures for the College of Theology) as centerpieces.  We had three colleges at each table.  Then, we went through all the cards to the Cranium game (this took a while!) and pulled out all the ones that might apply to any one of the colleges (we had to make up a couple of our own), until we had at least 8 or 9 cards for each table.

When the sisters arrived that night, we started in the R.S. room, and our teacher gave a short lesson on continuing education and goal-setting.  Then, we explained the night's plan (we called it "orientation") and passed out a pen to each sister.  We had pens in four different colors, and the color they got corresponded to one of the tables in the cultural hall.  They all went to their table, and we gave them a "syllabus" (the folders we had prepared), and explained how the C.U. program works.

Then, the fun part!  Each table played Cranium, using the cards we had selected.  It was a blast, and everyone was laughing and having fun.  After 15 minutes, we rotated to the next table, until everyone had been to all four tables.  The R.S. Presidency and Enrichment committee were the professors (we all dressed very scholarly), and sat at their table leading the game, and explaining their specific colleges.

In between tables, we gave the sisters a few minutes to go get food at the table in the middle of the room (sisters brought their favorite snack foods).  At the end, we encouraged everyone to enroll in C.U., and to let us know what their major is, so we can plan enrichment activities that will help them earn their degrees.

It was a very fun night, and I think most of the sisters were excited to try the C.U. program.  The only thing I would change is maybe to do a different game or activity at each table, instead of the same one -- Cranium got a little boring after a while!

We plan to keep encouraging the C.U. program throughout the year, and give little rewards at EN to those who have accomplished some goals in their major.  Hopefully, we'll have a graduation near the end of the year for those who earned their degrees!
