Popcorn Early Bird Special by: Sis. Sue Frelick Nova Scotia, Canada
The early bird went well last night! I had 7 sisters show up for it and they really enjoyed themselves. I told them that it was meant to be a fun time; a special treat for them for coming early.
My Guessing Game clues were a little hard. No one was able to guess that the topic was popcorn, but when I opened the room dividing curtains to unveil the tables set up with 7 popcorn recipes all else was forgotten. Every one, though shy at first, was soon enjoying the taste tests and was trying to guess what seasonings had gone into each recipe. I included a fancy jar with popcorn in it to see who could guess how many kernels were in the jar. (1 cup = 1,668 seeds) The prize for guessing was supposed to be a packet of popcorn seeds to plant, but no one came close which is just as well because I couldn’t find the seeds anywhere! I guess they have to be special ordered in my area. So, the jar of popcorn became the prize for the sister who was closest. We ended on time at 5 to the hour. The whole thing only took about 15 minutes including a short discussion on how popcorn can become an important addition to our food storage. Some of the reasons the sisters came up with were that it can boost moral during difficult times, it is nutritious, it stores easily, and it can be used to make crafts and decorations.
I’m hoping that if the word spreads, more sisters will attend next month.
