Care of Being Cruise – USS Pineville
Submitted by: Chrys Solomon
May 15, 2003

This event took a lot of work and planning and was pretty stressful right us
until the Day.
We had 2 Sundays for publicity.
First Sunday – I put up posters and flyers through out the building and on all 3
entrances of the chapel. It was a travel sign and announced that we were taking
a cruise to the care of being and had the time, date, place and what we were
doing. Rice buddies, bath salts, live entertainment and learn how to hula.
Second Sunday – Happened to be Mother’s Day so we were fortunate to have all of
the sisters in the RS room. The posters went back up and then I purchased 2
packets of 100 bags each. One for the RS and one for the priesthood. The
priesthood had peanuts w/ shells in their bag and a tag with an elephant and a
question mark over the elephants head. The tag read: Me thinks, I would go
NUTS if she weren’t at enrichment. The men loved it! Men are so easy to
please. The problem with this handout is they are also very messy. There were
peanut hulls everywhere. The RS were given 2 choc chip cookies in their bag
with a tag that read “Chips ahoy, Your chip has finally come in” with the
details of our enrichment night. We also sang a parody to twinkle twinkle
little star. This was sent in by AllisonB.
Twinkle, Twinkle, Little star,
We know just how stressed you are.
Celestial Spa is the place for you,
to learn some skills to see you through.
So come on out to Enrichment Nite.
Try real hard with all your might.
The sisters always enjoy the little songs we do. My nursery leader made
homemade choc. Chip cookies as well and passed them out. The word had been sent
and publicity was done now all we had to do was wait for Thursday.
My committee and I met together and we made candy leis for each of the sisters.
I was in charge of making the bath salts ahead of time and another lady Cathy
Loeper graciously volunteered to make 60 rice buddies.
She put these rice
buddies with a cute poem by Shiloah Baker .
This little pillow filled with rice
Is such a comforting device,
Microwave for 2 to 3 minutes on HIGH
And kiss those aches and pains good-bye.
Apply it to a troubled spot
The heat will ease the pain alot.
Or warm those little toes, so cold.
You'll find this nice to have and to hold
Or freeze it for awhile,
And fix that boo-boo in style.
Instead of a compress made of ice,
Use this pillow filled with rice.
Shiloah Baker
I was too busy to pre make my bath salts so I went to Targets and bought some
jars at $3 a piece and each jar made 8 bags with ˝ cup of salts to each. The
directions required a handful so this worked. I tied a cute ribbon bow to it
and had a tag with a bath tub that read For you, a small gift to show that I
care.
Because Christmas is such a fun time to share.
When the holidays are over, and you've had your last laugh.
Use these sweet smelling crystals, and relax in your bath! This was sent in by
a sister named Shari but we revised the words a little to fit our evening.
We had all the facial handouts and spa handouts that were sent in by Lisa
Sampson and Sam Cousins. I ran those off and the sisters were able to pick them
up as they left. Each of the tables were just come and take tables and
informational. We had cute signs for each table. It was fun.
The front entrance of the chapel was a banner saying welcome aboard and we had 2
wooden planks lined up in front of the door. We had wooden posts and roped
attached to each post. It really looked like a ship walkway as the sisters
entered the building there was another sign that read USS Pineville. Right
before the entered the RS room we had our 2 dancers dressed in costume and they
presented the leis to the sisters who arrived. The early bird prize was a fresh
flower lei made by Marieta Reid. We had our opening and then a wonderful lesson
given by Cathy Groesbeck. Our Bishop was there he was the captain of our
vessel.
The Bishop’s class was held on the “Son Deck” or the observatory Room which was
in the Primary room. We had this room completely dark and there was a picture
of Christ in the center of the room. I had used white net lights that you use
on your bushes outside at Christmas time and taped them to the ceiling. This
was an awesome affect. It truly looked like stars in the sky. I was proud of
that look. The sisters were too. These lights took forever to put up until two
of our tall missionaries came in they are 6’8 and 6’9. Once they came the job
went so fast. If you are not as lucky plan on 8 nets taking at least 2.5
hours.
He gave a wonderful talk on our Savior and finding him through the Scriptures.
So, as on every cruise once you are fed ( and we just experienced a spiritual
feast) we were ready for our entertainment.
We were in the gym. We lined 9 ficus trees from the half court line and that
was our way of making the evening more intimate in such a large space. We
completely blacked out the other side of the gym. We decorated the other half
completely. We hung aloha print material on some of the walls and we had all
the display tables covered with aloha print. The food table was decorated with
a grass table skirt and an aloha print table cloth. We brought our patio umbrella
which was green and taped raffia grass skirts to the top and it looked like a
hut. This table was decorated really cute. She went all out. We just served
smoothies and cake. There were 5 blenders set up. It went well.
As the sisters first entered the gym the lights were low and we had Mario
Fatefehi perform the New Zealand Haka. He was awesome. It was a definite
attention getter. It is a war dance performed by men. He definitely went all
out. Awesome. Then I introduced our 2 hula dancers and they did a traditional
dance. Very beautiful to Uluvehi ka koi. It was so beautiful to watch. They
performed exactly what I wanted. I did not want to give the sisters the
traditional tourist hula. I wanted them to experience hula for what it truly is.
Sisters who were watching were weeping it was so beautiful. After they performed
they then taught the sisters a dance to E huli Makaou. We passed out Lava lavas
for each sister to wear while she danced. These are like sarongs.
The sisters had so much fun. We had all 54 of them up and practicing. The
really caught on really fast!! I was impressed. We then had our blessing and
refreshments while eating and socializing we had our Lounge singer come back out
(Mario) and he sang to us. We had a karaoke machine set up. The older woman
appreciated being sung to. It was good background music.
The sisters had a wonderful time. We really needed a social and they said they
look forward to enrichment nights. Many compliments but I have great people who
again came through for me. I am blessed and very thankful.
Of course, I stressed stressed stressed so that the sisters would have a good
night. This was one of my hardest nights to do but it was worth it for them. I
had two classes bail so we just extended the practice time and Bishop’s time.
It is always the person behind the scenes who falls apart because they know of
all the disasters. No one showed up for nursery and that was sad. The sister
over nursery did not go in and cover. We need a presidency meeting.
Over all it was a great night. I know I left details out about the decorations
and things but this is long enough. I need a clean up committee. I didn’t get
out of the chapel till after 10:30. The sisters just did not want to leave
which is always a good sign.
