Christmas Themed Super
Saturdays

Super Saturdays with a Christmas theme can be so fun!
They can teach craft, gifts, and planning ideas for a holiday that everyone
always enjoys new ideas for. Here is a long list of ideas for putting
together your Christmas themed Super Saturday.
We had a "holiday-how-to" night with
demonstrations of all kinds of different and inexpensive Christmas gift giving
ideas.
We had classes on creative gift giving, creative gift bags, gift ideas for
kids, gifts in a jar, bead and button jars, easy marbleizing and dipping
chocolates, along with a display table of inexpensive gift ideas. My husband
even did a display with ads from the newspaper on inexpensive gift ideas for
guys.

I thought I would let everyone know
what our ward is doing. On October 8 we are having a Super Craft day (like a
Super Saturday, only on a Wednesday - we don't have a good turnout on
Saturdays).
This is going to be crafts only with a time during the day and the classes
offered again in the evening (6-8:30). During the day we are having a potluck
since it will be from 10-2.
The crafts are:
1. An angel ornament, 2 1/4" tall (we are offering this as a free craft and
buying the kits from Oriental Trading Company for 41 cents each)
2. A nativity countdown banner (has a felt manger scene with foam characters and
things that get put on one at a time until Christmas - kits from Oriental
Trading Company) - about $1.50 each.
3. Snow-dipped ornaments (uses plain colored ball Christmas ornaments which are
either dipped into white latex or craft paint or have the paint sponged on) -
cost should be minimal (everybody has house paint sitting around and plain
ornaments aren't expensive).
4. Flour sack bread towels with embellishments (motif for spring, fall, and
Christmas) - haven't determined the cost yet, but again should be fairly
inexpensive.
5. Popcorn packets - a bag of
microwave popcorn (supplied by the sisters) is but inside a brown lunch bag and
wrapped with raffia and a colored card on top that says "Just poppin' by to say
Merry Christmas!" - free
6. Journal jars - this one is from the group
(
http://holidayorganizer.com/gifts/giftsjar/journal.html)
- we will print out journal idea sheets and the sisters can socialize and cut
them out and put them in their own jars or whatever - free
7. Etched holiday plates - these will
be just clear plates that the sisters can make, either a single or batches, with
a variety of shapes that can be etched on (leaves, Christmas trees, bells, etc.)
- this will be our most expensive project.
We tried to have projects that would
fit everyone's budget and tastes and many things that can be used for Christmas
gifts.
Thanks for all your ideas.

What we are doing for Super Saturday:
Painting a snowman decoration.
Having a demo on peanut brittle shaped into a bowl and other candies to fill.
Class on 100 ways to say I love You
How to de-stress through the holidays
A class on Christmas music and books
Fleece blanket that will be have tied knots around the edges
Framing the
Living Christ words with pictures of Christ around the edges.

We used crafts from a craft magazine, bought the parts at a
local craft warehouse, and had fun creating. The two main ones this
year were Muffin tins decorated like snow men - prime bottom of pan (cups upside
down) paint bottom (around cups ) blue, paint cups white, add orange wood noses,
splatter with snow ( white paint) raffia bow at top, hang with crafters
wire, or with hole on pan. Add the words, "snowy, snowy night" in the
spaces between cups.
The other one we did was a pot of friends. Clay pot, 5 wooden spoons cut
to varying lengths, decorated as a reindeer, Santa, snowman, penguin and
polar bear. Wooden star on front says Happy holidays.
Use craft sticks and wood cutouts for the shapes of antlers, faces, noses, etc..
Of course, there is Spanish moss around the spoons and all have scarves tied
around their "necks" Santa had a body made of a stiff foamy type stuff
with a shirt over it. Total cost for both projects was less than $7.oo.

For our Super Saturday event, we
are doing a 25 cent to $1.00 table that will have gift bags to decorate,
lollipop spiders, paper mache boxes, stars shape mostly, to look like Santa's,
candy cane mouse, stamping Christmas cards, etc..
There will also be handouts of cookies in a jar, food mixes in a jar, a cheap
usable gift ideas list, the Santa's keys poem, and all the good Christmas
stories like The White Stocking, Jakes Orange, etc.
Then for our main crafts, we are making Turkey pumpkins where you paint the
wooden pieces (feathers, head and feet) and then stick them into a pumpkin.
I have a cousin who makes mega amounts of different plaques and things on a
computerized saw and so I had him make up 40 plaques that say either:
"Families Are Forever", "Return with Honor" or "Love One Another." The Sisters
can either paint them, stain them or just leave them plain and spray a sealant
over them. They are about 3 ft. long and are beautiful!
We are also doing a Pumpkin Trio, made out of wooden logs, of different sizes,
paint them orange and then you drill a hole in the top and put a stick in it for
the stem. Tie some raffia on the stem and you have a decoration for Halloween or
Thanksgiving.
Then, we have a snowman that stands about 3 ft. tall that we will paint and he
is holding a tree with lights. The Sister teaching it got the idea from the
Terry's Village catalog! He is so cute!
For lunch we will have Chicken salad with croissants and fruit and then we
asking the Sisters to bring their favorite cookies with the recipes.

Santa's Workshop
This was our November activity and we did a Super Saturday.

art picture and the following info:

others.
This and that table: No hassle wreaths, homemade cards and gift tags, gifts in a
jar and more.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Reminder given out Sunday before: A candy cane with the info attached.
A poster was on the main bulletin board had a big Santa on it and his bag full
of toys was sitting next to him and the info for the day was on the bag.
Matching flyers in RS/YW and Primary rooms.
Set up:
Main room for the lunch: Lots of Christmas stuff--lights, tree, an
electric fireplace with a couple of rocking chairs next to it, The tables were
set up with Christmas tablecloths, centerpieces with greenery and battery
operated lights, red ribbon and pomegranates (a fruit), they looked really nice.
We had red and green napkins and some sisters brought in their Christmas
dinnerware. At each place setting was a small box made from Christmas cards and
4 homemade chocolates were placed in it. and then the box was wrapped in a gold
bow.
In each room for the classes: on the door was a wreath and the name of the class
was on a painted wood piece that was hung on the wreath, Each room had tables
and chairs and a small tree and nativity scene.
The brother that did the turkey tidbit class was a chef at one time, he gave a
handout with the information he presented and included recipes.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The lunch: Turkey, salads, cranberry sauce, rolls and a red punch. Dessert was
various kinds of cheesecake.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
A surprise for the sisters: Santa
showed up during lunch and handed out the ornaments my counselor and I had made:
Clear glass ornaments with sand and seashells and they had a gold bow attached
with the poem that goes with it.
It was a great day and everyone had positive things to say about it. We had 38
sisters attend which considering we only have about 16 on Sundays, not bad.
