Girl's Night

Here's how our night went last night (we had a good turnout of around 60 women and girls).

We started with an ice breaker.  The women separated into groups of 8 and they were challenged to make the longest line they could using only inanimate objects they had with them.  This was fun...the ladies were using everything from belts to individual pieces of gum. (Winners got homemade cookies)

The rest of the night was all self-directed.  I just explained the different stations and they went at their own pace.  Here were the stations:

1. Brownie sundae ice cream shop: where they made their own sundaes and while there they took a manners quiz (posted at the bottom).

2. Craft Central: Here we had a bunch of silk flowers and they were each to bring some flip flops with them.  They hot glued flowers onto the flip flops and we had some barrettes also that they could decorate with flowers if they wanted.  I also had some yarn and some chose to tie yarn around the flip flops.  All turned out VERY cute.

3, Spa room:  In this room I set up 3 stations.  A massage station with information about hand and foot reflexology.  There were also bean bags to relax on, some handheld (wooden) massage tools and some homemade massage oils to try.  The next station had some home made facials to test (very popular with the 10-14 age girls).  I also made up a sheet with several recipes to do your own spa at home (some from www.homemakingcottage.com and other internet sites).  The last station here was a manicure table complete with all the tools and polishes, etc.

I had many compliments and it seemed everyone had a great time.

Here is the manners quiz I had in the ice cream shop.  I made up the questions from books I found at the library (one good one is "OOPS, an American Girls manners guide for girls".  The answers I posted on a table in the corner.

a. Blame it on the person next to you
b. Say sorry and help clean it up

2 - When you are a guest, indicate the best thing to do if you are served something you don't like.
a. Quietly try it and leave what you don't like

3. Which of the following indicates the proper way to eat a dinner roll?
a. Cut with a knife and fork.
b. Cut in half, butter and put back together like a sandwich
c. Break off, butter and eat one bite at a time
4. When is it appropriate to start eating?
a. As soon as the host/hostess starts eating or urges you to
b. As soon as you are served
c. As soon as at least 3 people are served
5. You bite down on a big piece of gristle (GAG!).  What do you do with it?
a. Quietly spit it into your napkin
b. Swallow it down
c. Remove it with your fingers and place it on your plate
6- When do you put your napkin on your lap?
a. When the food comes
b. When the hostess does
c. When you first sit down
7 - Which indicates the best way to eat long spaghetti?
a. Cut it into bite size pieces
b. Slowly slurp one strand at a time
c. Wind a few strands around your fork
8 - Which of the following is NOT considered a "finger food"?
a. Grapes
b. Pizza
c. Bacon
d. Asparagus
9 - What do you do if you drop a utensil?
a. Pick it up and ask for another
b. Leave it there and ask for another
c. Pick it up, wipe with your napkin and use it
10 - What is the most appropriate way to get peas onto your fork?
a. Pinch between roll and fork
b. Stab with fork
c. Use a knife to slide them on
11 - What does RSVP stand for?
a. Remind Several People
b. Respond Soon Before Party
c. Reply if you Please
12 - When you have finished your meal...
a. Excuse yourself, leave your napkin in your chair and leave quietly
b. Pile napkin, cup and utensils on plate then take to the kitchen as you leave.
c.  Refold napkin, place utensils on your plate (handles facing right) and wait until everyone else is finished.
13 - Which direction is food passed around the table?
a. To the left
b. To the right
c. To the person across from you

8 - c (unless the asparagus has a sauce)

Remember, if all else fails and you're not sure what to do...watch your hostess (or your mother)!


AND

You'll never go wrong with THE GOLDEN RULE (do unto others as you would have them do to you)!

Here's some other no-nos to remember:
- Don't lick your fingers
- Don't talk with food in your mouth
- Don't criticize the meal
- Don't mix your food
- Don't dunk your break
- Don't tuck your napkin in your collar
- Don't pick your teeth or blow your nose
- Don't put salt and pepper on your food before you taste it
- Don't leave your cell phone on
- And...don't forget to thank your hostess!
