Relaxing Spa Retreat Contributed by: Valerie Steadman
I've been the Enrichment leader for 7 months now, and I still look back to one particular activity in awe. We had the most relaxing, enjoyable time doing a Spiritual Spa Retreat. We met in a neighbors yard, surrounded by trees and a small stream. You have to see this place to believe it, but any outdoor campground would work if needed. We asked sisters to bring their own foot basin, towel, and journal or scriptures. We started off with a foot soak, we provided the Epsom salt soak and callous scrub and warm water. While the sisters soaked their feet, they listened to a spiritual lesson about stress and caring for their bodies. Here is the introduction: "Close your eyes. Picture yourself at your physical and spiritual best. You have to be in tune with your body and your spirit. This helps you build a relationship with Heavenly Father. You need to nurture that relationship. You can be prepared to do your best in life, serve others, and be better disciples. As you soak your feet, think of washing away past regrets, disappointments, and sadness. As you smooth the calluses on your feet, think of symbolically scrubbing away the rough edges of your life.
I brought you here to be able to meditate, reflect on the direction of your life, and rejuvenate your body and spirit. Start a fresh perspective on church callings & personal relationships. Open your eyes." After the lesson, the sisters dried off their feet, and we moved to blankets on the lawn where we did a relaxation breathing exercise. Yoga would also be nice for this part. Then we had the sisters practice what they'd learned and they were free to write in their journals or read scriptures or just enjoy nature. They were able to spread out through the yard, one in a tree house, another in the gazebo. They had 15 minutes for this, just a glimpse of how a little time can help us feel a lot better. Then we ate fresh raspberry sorbet with fresh raspberries on top, although any healthy snack could be used. It was such a nice activity, and the sisters who missed it really made it a point to come next month after the comments in RS that Sunday. Hopefully this helps you plan a nice activity of your own.
