Lifting the Sick's Burdens

by: Aine Schulmire

The scriptures are full of Christ's example lifting up the sick beyond their current condition. Through His own suffering and experiences He is able to understand all human suffering and grief. As we read about His life, we see the great compassion He had for those who were sick, lame, blind, or afflicted in any such manner. He healed and comforted them according to their faith. We, in turn, can follow His perfect example by uplifting those who are afflicted. This is a form of service that is not often thought of, but is heartfully welcomed.

Knowing how and when to lift the sick spiritually requires a discerning heart. We need to be prepared and willing to be lead by the Spirit of the Lord. A person who is ill may become discouraged, lonely, unable to do routines or pay bills, or have other difficulties. It has been proven that peace of mind and emotional well-being is critical to a patient's recovery. As we help alleviate a sick person's anxieties, faith and hope will be renewed. Knowing that someone cares uplifts the soul.

If we listen carefully, although a sick person may not ask for help specifically, we can discern their anxieties and find avenues of service. Some examples of uplifting the sick might include these ideas:

- Remembering to give them a phone call, or just drop by
- Bring food in for the family as the need dictates
- Do the shopping for the family
- Babysitting for doctors appointments, or furnishing rides to the doctor
- Taking children into your home during a hospitalization, as needed
- Read books or magazines onto a tape for the blind
- Housekeeping such as mopping floors or laundry
- Encourage them to express their feelings.
- Share uplifting scriptures or stories

We must serve the sick freely and lovingly. If we are guided by unfeigned love and understanding, the bonds between us and those we serve will be strengthened. Though we cannot lift another's burden, we can help lift the sick until they can bear it themselves. As we do this, we will know that the Lord's promise holds true in Matt. 25:40, "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."
