The Relief Society

One hundred fifty years ago
A banner was unfurled
For the organization of women
That was known in all the world
It was organized and blessed
By a Prophet of the Lord
The work is still progressing
According to His Word
The sisters were given the task
Of stamping out vice and sin
To cheer up the widows and orphans
And cultivate love within
He gave them the responsibility
Of caring for the poor
And organized the teachers
To go door to door
That none should be neglected
Or suffer for want of bread
He started a fund for charity
"To relieve the poor," He said
Told also to seek
For knowledge and for truth
To plant faith and love of God
In the hearts and minds of youth
At first they were few in numbers
But increased through the years along
Until now they number better
Than three million strong
Each year brought new duties
And opportunities to show
Their love for all humanity
As the seasons come and go
They often meet to quilt and sew
Or to can and try to save
All surplus food for their storehouse
They are faithful, true, and brave
They comfort those with broken hearts
Whose lives are torn and frail
And pray that truth and right may win
And that peace will soon prevail
They have now joined hands
With faithful ones far across the sea
Who do their best to carry on
Through war and poverty
The good they have accomplished
Will live throughout the years
Good deeds they have accomplished
Will live throughout the years
Good deeds made up of faith and love
And sympathy and tears.
