Combined YW/YM Contributed by: Dawn Salisbury
z Road Rally: Have the YM and YW submit two places to be used as a stopping point. The leaders take 1 suggestion from each group and made a course for each team to follow on the night of the rally. The YM/YW were divided into groups and given specific rules to follow, one certain thing they were to do, and one thing to bring back to them, and a certain amount of time to get back. z Christmas Remembrance for the Elderly: At a fireside on Sunday divide the youth into groups of 5 or 6 and give each group a tape recorder. Each group is given the names of 1 or 2 elderly people in the ward. Have the youth visit with the those they were assigned to about the Christmas they remembered best or their most special Christmas. Type up the recorded stories and compile into a book. In December, have the youth host a nice dinner for the people that were visited and present them with a copy of this book of special memories. z Carnival of Life: The Laurels plan the event. Each of the Laurels plan 2 different game booths. Bob for Apples, Guess the Prophet, Scripture Chase, Putting Golf, etc. Each game had a given number of points assigned to it and the youth were given tickets at each game. Have some Primary aged girls dress in white to enter the culture hall and start pulling people out. Have them bring the people to the Relief Society room which is divided into three kingdoms. Have the Bishop assign the people to their kingdoms depending on how many points they have. When all the youth are gathered into the Relief Society room, ask the Bishop to talk to them about how important the choices we make in life are to our eternal salvation. z Budgeting Your Money: The Priests plan the event. Have a financial planner help guide them through the event. The youth are divided into families and are given a budget including an amount of money and a set of situations to deal with such as car repairs, etc. Tithing is at the top of the list, followed by house payment, utilities, groceries, clothing budget, care payments or maintenance, savings, recreation, etc. The youth have to decide how much to put out on each time depending upon their income. The group that has the most money left at the end of their “month” wins. z Rope Course: Blind fold the youth and then pair them off. Lead them out of the church by leaders and guide them to the start of the course and at the end of a rope. One partner holds to the rope with one hand and to his/her partner with the other hand. The main rope leads around the Church grounds and back to the entrance. However, other ropes with dead ends were also attached to the main rope. After all the youth made it back they discussed this experience and its relationship to our life, faith and the iron rod. z Craft Night: Decide on a craft to make that will promote thoughts of their individual worth. The benefits of the evening will give the girls and leaders some relaxing time to talk and support each other’s skill. z Visit to the State Prison: Arrangements need to be made several months in advance with the prison and with parents. Set it up so that a panel of inmates can tell a little bit about themselves and why they were there. Allow the youth to ask any questions. Value: Choice and Accountability. z Video Scavenger Hunt: Mix groups of boys and girls, and give each group a video camera and a list of things that the group have to do. Each group has to complete all items on the list and then return to the church to share their video with the other groups. Things to do: Interview a missionary on the street, ask someone for directions, etc.
