Career Night
Objective: To get the youth to think about their future careers Preparation: Before the activity get the following ready: Printed Blank Work Schedules (In Microsoft Word Format) 1 or 2 Speakers (10-15 minutes each) One of the speakers will be a college graduate that has recently landed in a good job. He or she will be talk about the things he or she did to prepare for his/her career. (How he/she looked for a job, how he/she applied, things he/she looked for) The other speaker will be a recent high school graduate who just started college. He or she will be speaking about the things he or she did to prepare for college. (Applying for scholarships, making a decision about which college to go to, etc.) Items for the Suitcase Relay 4-5 suitcases & 4-5 different outfits per suitcase (adjust for your number of youth) An outfit can consist of 3 things a suitcoat, tie, dress shoes (make outfits to fit different careers ex: Flippers, a snorkel and oversized tee or cleats, baseball cap, and sports tee) Activity Night: After the youth arrive, introduce the guest speakers. Allow both speakers to give his or her presentation. Allow questions. After the speakers are through, hand out the printed schedules. Have the youth fill out their schedules according to how they think a normal day at work would go in their chosen career. Call on some of the youth to share their schedules. (It’s funny to see how much time they give themselves for breaks!) Finally split the youth into 4 or 5 teams of 4-5 youth for the suitcase relay. Have the suitcases lined up on one side of the gym and the youth lined up in front of their suitcase on the other side of the gym. The youth need to be in their sox! You will need to have leaders near the suitcases ready to pop in the next outfit. A leader will give the go ahead to start the relay and one member from each team will run to the other side of the gym and open his or her suitcase and put on whatever outfit is in the suitcase and will run back to their team and high five the next runner. (As the member runs back –a leader will need to put the next outfit in the suitcase and close the suitcase quickly for the next runner). The first team to finish wins! After the relay close with a prayer and serve refreshments.
